Always check with a doctor first before doing any physical  and/or therapeutic body work.  Breath work can have deep emotional consequences too.

You might feel much better very quickly - do not overdo regular activities. People feel better so quickly that they can hurt themselves in the real world.

WORK SMART -  BE CAREFUL!

I like to teach people in such a way that they themselves can understand and feel when they are ‘doing it right’.

I have set very clear criteria for doing all the basics of Pilates.

We are not going to do many ‘full’ exercises here. There are many sites and books that tell you a bunch of Pilates’ exercises.

Slow, deliberate, conscious, thoughtful, and correct. Those are touted as the basics in Pilates.

As we piece it together (with the breath as the glue), we will do the simplest of movements, slowly, deliberately, consciously, and correctly (and maybe even happily!).

The first movement we will do will be taking a bent leg to tabletop. For those who don’t know, this means lying on ones back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor - Then lifting one of the bent legs so that it remains bent in the air - like a table!

That’s it! That’s about as far as we are going to go on this website! Well, maybe another half dozen simple movements. But we will learn the correctly, and then build strenght and integration with them.

Beginners or absolutely advance Pilates people can learn from this. It is super advance, in a simple way!

JOE IS NOT GOD! Just because Pilates said something doesn’t mean that he was correct.

But the impact of the current ‘Pilates industry’ shows that certainly he was a movement expert and genius. Joe said:

“Above all, learn how to breathe correctly”

So maybe we should try and see if using breath in a new way actually does make us learn his complicated method at a deeper and smarter level.

The slogan for my Pilates Studio is “When in doubt, breath out’.

For the last 12 years I have explored the limits of Pilates’ statements. I have followed his breath instructions to their logical conclusion. I believe it works.

This deep breath focus, coupled with specific muscle engagements (egs: ‘pull the belly-button to the spine’ or ‘slide the shoulder blades down the back’), helps people to move better quicker. Smarter, and with a great transformational potential.

I teach Pilates a little differently.

I set criteria to test whether Joe Pilates’ methods work.

I also teach simple movements so that we can actually do them correctly.

AND I try to explore Joe’s own words and suggestions, and then see if following them extremely carefully helps us learn quicker and move better.

What am I talking about?

Let’s start with what Pilates said about breath. He said it was the most important thing, He also said to breath out fully. Wring the air out of our lungs the way we “wring water from a cloth”.

Joe said all these things. Breath is MOST important, and breath out so fully that you are squeezing ALL the air out.

So I explore breathing like this. I follow it to a natural conclusion - The ‘Circle of Six’ Breath. I believe this ‘Circle of Six’ Breath is the clearest ever technical explanation of Pilates breath.
